Oracy
Oracy is the golden thread woven into everything we do at Leigh Primary School. It is valued by all and a part of every child’s journey at our school. From children thinking and nesting in their classrooms to the bustling dinner halls and playgrounds, the power of voice permeates every aspect of a child’s life at Leigh. Oracy is not just about speaking; it is about listening too. Celebrating oracy at our school is more than just words; it is about empowerment, encouraging and equipping and every child’s voice being valued by their peers, staff and their families.
Intent
Our school vision was devised with the wider school community, including parents, to prepare children for life beyond the school gates. Leigh Primary School strives to be a community of lifelong learners, relationship builders and memory makers. To achieve this, oracy has valued the voice of every child enabling them to be confident communicators with the aspirations to become whoever they want to be. In turn this improves life chances, supports children to use their voice for success and prepares children for the next stage of their education and the wider world.
Over 90% of children at Leigh have English as an additional language; oracy supports the development of children’s vocabulary which is fundamental to their understanding across the curriculum. Oracy allows our children to develop their spoken language and plays a key role in how school provides children with a quality education.
Voice21 have supported us on our journey to become an Oracy Centre of Excellence.
